Antimicrobials are used to treat infections caused by species such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. These compounds may be synthesized or extracted from naturally occurring substances. They are used to kill the microorganisms or halt their growth. Antimicrobial drugs can be classified based on the microorganisms they target.
